ABOUT

Maria Khan

"Dharmesh Parmar's Indian tabla - a truly virtuoso percussion instrument, capable of varied, and almost voice-like expressive sounds. "

- Rod Fogg , London Jazz News

Training

At the age of 7, Dharmesh embarked on his tabla training journey with Rohit Mistry and Sandeep Virdee, who were both disciples of the late Bhai Gurmit Singhji Virdee. Eventually, he had the privilege of training directly under Gurmitji himself. Additionally, Dharmesh has also received training under Kumar Sashwat, broadening his exposure to Kathak and Indian Vocal music.  Currently, he continues to enhance his skills and seek guidance from Pandit Yogesh Samsi. Dharmesh's passion for the tabla, a complex percussion instrument of Indian origin, is evident in his exposure to diverse genres like North and South Indian, Western, and Fusion music.

Achievements

Some of his tabla achievements include an accompaniment of a South Asian Ensemble at the Purcell Room in Southbank, London, showcased on Sky Arts HD, a flamenco fusion ensemble at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as well as performing in Darbar’s Indian Vibes Series.

Furthermore, he regularly accompanies Eduardo Niebla, a celebrated Spanish guitarist and composer. Together, they have enthralled audiences across the UK and internationally. Dharmesh's musical prowess has gained recognition on a national level, with appearances on various BBC Radio and TV programs, where he was interviewed and showcased his tabla expertise. Notably, he was featured in Eduardo's latest album titled 'My Gypsy Waltz'.

Passion

Dharmesh's passion for percussion and tabla was ignited by his father's support and fueled by the captivating performances of tabla virtuosos from India during their visits to the UK. Since then, he has wholeheartedly devoted himself to cultivating this passion by teaching tabla and percussion to students and collaborating with fellow musicians, both locally and globally. Dharmesh's musical versatility extends far beyond tabla, encompassing a wide range of percussion instruments like the dhol and western drum kit.  His exceptional abilities across various musical genres serve as a testament to his deep knowledge, unwavering dedication, and genuine love for the art of percussion.
